What are the Main Types of Fuel for Oil Boilers

April 08, 2025

There are many types of fuels used in boilers, and different fuels have differences in pollutants, calorific value, and cost. The fuels of oil-fired boilers are generally divided into two categories: light fuel oil and heavy fuel oil.

A. Light diesel oil: Light diesel oil is used less frequently in oil boilers and has a relatively low density and low viscosity.

B. Heavy oil: Heavy oil is the remaining heavy oil after gasoline and diesel are extracted from crude oil. Heavy oil has high viscosity and its main component is hydrocarbons. The characteristic of heavy oil is its high calorific value, which is more suitable for boilers with high calorific value requirements.

C. Alcohol-based fuel: Alcohol-based fuel is a clean and environmentally friendly fuel. It is not as widely used as fuels such as oil and gas, and is suitable for small boilers.

In general, the type of oil used in oil-fired boilers varies depending on the conditions. Heavy fuel oil is mainly suitable for some economical oil-fired boilers, while light fuel oil is suitable for some high-grade oil boilers and fired needs with high quality requirements.
