What Are The Main Differences Between Steam Generator And Steam Boiler?

A steam generator is a mechanical device that uses thermal energy from fuel or other energy sources to heat water into hot water or steam. It is a small-scale piece of equipment and falls under the category of steam 

boilers. With a water capacity of less than 30 liters, it qualifies as an inspection-exempt steam boiler. According to the Boiler Safety Technical Supervision Regulations, equipment with a water capacity below 30 liters is 

not subject to mandatory inspection under boiler regulations.

A steam boiler is a heat exchange device that releases thermal energy through fuel combustion. This heat is transferred to water via a heat transfer process, transforming it into steam at specific temperatures and 

pressures. It is widely used in industrial production and manufacturing. As a special equipment, it imposes stringent requirements on corporate qualifications and product safety, necessitating annual inspections.

The differences between steam generators and steam boilers are as follows:

1. Steam Quality

Steam generators produce steam with high moisture content and generally lower quality. Steam boilers incorporate steam-water separators within their drums, yielding high-quality, pure steam.


2. Safety:

Steam Generators:

- Small water capacity (typically <30L)

- Rapid steam production

- Structurally less prone to explosions

- Exempt from inspection requirements

- High safety profile

Steam Boiler: Large water capacity, high output, strong load adaptability, and more stable long-term operation. Classified as special equipment requiring strict management, annual inspections, and posing explosion risks.


3. Size and Output:

Steam Generator: Simple structure, low single-unit output (e.g., 1-2 tons/hour), suitable for applications with modest steam demand.

Steam Boiler: Large dimensions, capable of continuously producing substantial high-pressure steam, suitable for large-scale industrial applications.


4. Management and Operation:

Steam Generator: Ready to use upon installation, no licensing or annual inspections required, relatively simple operation.

Steam Boiler: Requires a boiler room and certified boiler operators, necessitates usage registration and periodic annual inspections.


5. Installation:

Steam Generator: Can be placed near end-use equipment, minimizing pipeline losses.

Steam Boiler: Requires a dedicated boiler room with strict installation specifications.

Selection Recommendation:

If you require small-batch, rapid steam supply or wish to avoid cumbersome procedures, a steam generator is the better choice. For long-term needs of high-power, high-quality steam, a boiler is the more suitable solution.
